Foreign Currency & Forex Markup FAQ

How is foreign currency markup calculated on Indian credit cards?

When you make an international transaction (in USD, EUR, GBP, AED, THB, etc.), your card issuer converts the amount to INR using the network exchange rate (Visa/Mastercard) and levies a foreign currency markup fee (typically 3.5%). In addition, 18% GST is charged on this markup fee, resulting in an effective 4.13% surcharge over the interbank exchange rate.

What is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and why should you avoid it?

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) occurs when an overseas POS merchant or foreign website offers to bill you directly in INR instead of local currency. DCC exchange rates carry inflated markups of 5% to 8%. Always select the local destination currency (e.g. USD in the US, EUR in Europe, THB in Thailand) to avoid DCC charges.

Do 0-Forex credit cards charge any hidden conversion markup?

Cards we hold a verified 0% markup for (IDFC FIRST Mayura Metal Credit Card, RBL Bank World Safari Credit Card, Scapia Federal Bank Credit Card, ixigo AU Small Finance Bank Credit Card) charge no conversion markup over the network wholesale exchange rate, so no GST arises on a markup fee. Always check the card's current MITC before relying on this.

Do international online software subscriptions (ChatGPT, Midjourney, Netflix US) attract forex markup?

Yes. Any transaction billed by an overseas entity in foreign currency attracts the standard 3.5% + 18% GST markup on regular bank cards. Using a 0-Forex card eliminates this fee completely.
